One battleship launched out of the mayhem and blasted into the atmosphere. The others kept bombarding each other, but in a few minutes, they tore themselves apart, too.

They launched one after another, either straight up into space or in different directions across the landscape. Rowe didn’t see where they went.

The light from all those gunshots faded and cast the landscape back into darkness. An orange glow from the burning wrecks of the crashed ships gave the only light to see anything.

Rowe and his fellow crewmen stayed behind the Sinade and waited for everyone to leave. In the end, two battleships stayed behind and landed not far away.

Floodlights switched on to illuminate the ground around the ships’ landing gear, and four crewmen came out of one of them. Two Ovions, a Doros, and an Irli approached the Sinade, but they were unarmed.

Rowe handed Leili his rifle. “Stay here,” he told his friends. “I’ll see what they want.”

He didn’t have to ask. As soon as he got close enough, he recognized the Letheans he’d just been negotiating with—the ones who’d asked him to lead them in abandoning the war.

The Doros came forward first. Blood dripped from his eyebrow. He kept pressing his shirt cuff to it to stop it from running in his eyes.

“We’d still like to join you if you’ll have us, Hellrider,” the guy began. “I don’t know what good two battleships will do, but the other two are gone.”

“Anything is better than nothing.” Rowe held out his hand. “I don’t know your name.”

“My name is Sheyan. I’m the captain of this ship. It’s the Kohana, and that ship over there is the Evos.”

Rowe shook hands with everyone, but he didn’t have time to ask their names before Zunu, Unus, Larus, and Zabro came over to them from the Sinade. “Look, Hellrider,” Unus murmured in his ear. “Some people survived the crash. They could be Tamerons.”

“All of you stay here.” He waved between Sheyan and the others. “These people are joining us. Unus, I want you and Alea to go up to the infirmary and see if Avo is back on duty. If he is, we need to organize a meeting between all the captains to decide what we’re going to do.”

Unus nodded, and Rowe hiked out alone toward the crashed ship. He couldn’t decide if he wanted them to be Tamerons or Letheans.

If they were Letheans, that would make three Lethean crews and one Tameron crew. Would the disparity cause issues later on?

If this new crew turned out to be Tameron, that would make two Lethean crews and two Tameron crews, which could present a completely different dynamic with problems of its own. Rowe couldn’t anticipate them all, and he wasn’t about to turn away anyone in distress.

A Hulliri captain came out to meet him when he got near the vessel. The guy towered over Rowe and scowled at the growing throng of crewmen in the distance. “What are you doing over there?” the guy demanded.

“Two of those ships are down for good,” Rowe told him.
